OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT (US Etsy sellers first) on the Stripe-co-developed Agentic Commerce Protocol on 29 Sep 2025; Google announced UCP-powered checkout in AI Mode and Gemini on 11 Jan 2026. By 24 Mar 2026 OpenAI was deprioritising Instant Checkout in favour of product discovery and merchant-owned checkout. The assistant is becoming the shelf faster than it is becoming the till.
